Recognizing Symptoms of Mould Toxicity
Mould is everywhere, and most people have no problem evading mould that surrounds them. However, those with compromised immune systems or those undergoing chronic stress we become susceptible to air borne toxins. There’s approximately 300,000 known chemicals that our body may be exposed to and have to protect ourselves from. Mould may or may not be the cherry on top leading to a cascade of symptoms, such as chronic fatigue, systemic inflammation, chronic headaches and/or migraines, sharp pains, chronic sinusitis, temperature dysregulation, muscle pain/weakness. Mould thrives in wet and damp environments especially in the walls of water damaged buildings. Upon activation mould spores are then produced and released giving off toxins as part of their metabolic by-products, also known as mycotoxins. Mycotoxins are what enters the body through the airways, the gut, skin and eyes and are able to reproduce inside of us. Mould toxicity is a complex illness resulting from the accumulation of mycotoxins in one’s body. Mycotoxins have considerable impacts on human health and while some people are more resilient against their impact, others have a difficult time eliminating mycotoxins and are therefore more severely affected by their presence.
Naturopathy offers a Personalized Approaches to Detoxification and Support
As naturopathic doctors we start suspecting mould involvement based on clinical symptoms, however this might look different for everyone regardless of the mycotoxin involved. For a lack of better terms mold illness patients have most likely been put through the wringer of the medical system. Their labs have always come back “normal” despite how fatigued they feel, they can have good days but they mostly have bad days and they might not be “ill” but they're also not well. A naturopathic doctor can be instrumental in assessing mould-related health issues and creating a personalized treatment plan that may include detoxification strategies, dietary recommendations, and immune support. If you suspect mould exposure has impacted your health, Dr. Shelby can help!
